Infortrend has just released the New 8Gb Fibre to SAS/SATA 3Gb RAID Unit. The first unit released with the new "G6" 667MHz ASIC RAID Engine is the Dual Controller 3U 16 Bay "ESS16F-R1840" RAID Unit. It offers JBOD Expansion to 112 SAS or SATA Drives. Each Controller offers Two(2) 8Gb Fibre Host Ports and One(1) SAS Expansion Port.

  NEW: Flash Memory Feature

The G6 Series of Controllers are now offering Infortrend's new Flash memory module support for the controllers cache management. The cache is still supported by battery back-up module. Currently with only up to a battery life of a 72 hour window to restore power on traditional systems, the battery can transfer the data in volatile cache to flash memory in a few minutes once the system senses loss of power. No more worrying about a time clock to restore power as to not loose valuable data during such events as Ice Storms, Floods, Fires or other events that can add to long down times. With the minimal usage on the battery, Infortrend has extended the battery Limited Warranty from 1 year to 3 years.

 

The "R1840" comes with all major components redundant and field replaceable such as controllers, power supplies and cooling fan modules. Infortrend supplies a 1GB Cache module per controller which is upgradable to 2GB per controller. With RAID 6 Hardware Technology on board, the Infortrend units can sustain 2 drive failures and still be operational. You can replace the failed drives and rebuild the array without any downtime.

Going Green IT

Infortrend in an effort to go green, has made steps to replace the Metal used in their fabrication with more environmentally friendly material that still carries the same strength as the previous metal. All their equipment is now RoHS Compliant. RoHS is the "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" in Electrical and Electronic Equipment. They use dual stage fans and load balancing power supplies to reduce power during slow periods. They recently added two levels of drive idle spin down options to help reduce power usage as well.
